Most front doors are 36 inches wide, which makes 17×30 inches the natural fit — it covers the swing path without poking past the frame. A wider casing, a storm door, or a deeper stoop calls for 24×36. French or double doors want the 24×48. Get the size right and the door still closes; get it wrong and you'll be tripping over a curled edge all season.
Low profile beats thick every time
A mat around 0.4 inches thick slides under the door without catching — even with a storm or screen door in the mix. Thick, plush mats look cozy in the cart and useless at the threshold. Keep it low and the door keeps working.
