When to put out a fall doormat (and when to swap it)

There's no official rule for when a fall doormat goes out — but there is a rhythm that most porches follow. Put it out too early and it feels rushed; too late and you've missed half the season.

The sweet spot: late August to early September

For most of us, fall energy starts right around back-to-school and Labor Day, even if the leaves haven't turned yet. That's the moment to swap a summer mat for a fall one. The porch starts to feel cozy a full month before the first real chill.

When the first leaf falls, you're on time

If you miss late August, don't stress. The first week leaves start dropping is the most natural cue. A fall mat still has weeks of work to do through October and into Thanksgiving.

Halloween: September through October 31

Halloween mats go up in September and come down the morning of November 1. A friendly ghost or a not-too-scary spider sets the trick-or-treat mood without scaring the littlest visitors. Swap back to a fall design for November — Thanksgiving still counts as autumn.

Everyday mats: all year round

A classic welcome or a timeless stripe never goes out of season. Keep one on hand for the in-between weeks — late winter, early spring, and any stretch where a themed mat would feel forced.

How to make the swap feel easy

Shake out the old mat, give it a rinse if it needs it, and store it flat (not folded) so it stays crisp for next year. A thirty-second swap is all it takes to refresh the whole threshold.
