Rubber vs coir doormats: which should you actually buy?

Walk into any hardware store and you'll see two camps: bristly coir (coconut fiber) mats and smooth rubber ones. They do different jobs — here's how to choose.

Coir: the classic scraper

Coir's rough fibers are brilliant at knocking heavy mud and grit off boots. The downside: it sheds, holds moisture, and can fade in full sun. Best as an outside scraper.

Rubber: the grippy all-rounder

A rubber-backed mat is designed to help reduce shifting, handles routine porch moisture, and cleans with a hose. Actual grip varies by surface and condition, and coir may scrape more aggressively.

Why not both?
