A textured surface that scrapes, not just wipes

Look for a mat with a textured top that scrapes debris from shoes and paws. A smooth mat just smears mud around; a textured one lifts grit and traps it before it crosses the threshold.

Non-slip backing is non-negotiable

Wet feet plus a shifting mat can create a hazard. A full rubber backing is designed to help reduce movement, but grip varies with the floor, moisture, debris, wear, and maintenance.

Low profile, high tolerance

A mat around 0.4″ thick is thin enough to sit under the door without catching, but substantial enough to absorb the daily traffic of paws and boots.

It has to be easy to clean
